Performance calligraphy (書道パフォーマンス) is a kind of Japanese calligraphy combining traditional calligraphy with J-pop music and dance. It is a team activity, performed on large canvases.〔 Performance calligraphy is gaining popularity amongst young Japanese, especially high-school students.〔 Several high schools in Japan offer performance calligraphy as a club activity.〔 == Outline == A variety of different brushes are used in performance calligraphy, some almost 130 cm long. It is performed on large canvases, sometimes as much as ten meters long and five meters wide.〔 In the vast majority of cases it is performed by women, and performers usually wear traditional Japanese ''hakama''. Performance calligraphy requires strength and stamina, and the training for it can be tough. At Matsuyama Girls High School in Saitama Prefecture, students practice for four hours each day, and it is common for beginners to have muscle pain.〔
